The classic Christmas tree, and still the one that smells most like Christmas. The Norway spruce has fine, bright green needles and a strong, resinous pine scent that fills a room — the tree most people picture when they think of Christmas. It is a fast, reliable grower, naturally neat and conical in shape, and often the best value tree on the stand.

Grown in the pot it is sold in, with a well-established root system, so it can move from garden to front room and back out again without a check to its growth. Supplied bushy and evenly shaped, with a good straight leader, it makes a full, traditional tree.

Stand the pot in a cool spot away from radiators and open fires, water it regularly so the compost never dries out, and bring it in as close to Christmas as you can. Return it outdoors after the season and it will come back year after year.
