Blue Spruce (Picea pungens)

Potted / pot-grown — grown in the UK

The tree with the blue needles

The most striking tree on the stand. Blue spruce carries stiff, sharply pointed needles in a cool silvery-blue, denser and more formal in shape than the other Christmas trees, and it holds its colour well indoors. It is slower growing than the Norway spruce, which is why a good blue spruce costs more — and why it looks the part. Choose it if you want a tree that looks deliberate: strong symmetry, a crisp silhouette, and a colour nothing else on the stand has.

Grown in the pot it is sold in, with a well-established root system, so it can move from garden to front room and back out again without a check to its growth. Supplied bushy and evenly shaped, with a good straight leader, it makes a full, traditional tree.

Why customers choose it

• Colour: silvery-blue needles — the most distinctive tree on the stand
• Shape: dense, formal and strongly symmetrical; excellent for a styled or colour-coordinated room
• Needle retention: good to very good — better than the Norway spruce, though the Nordman still lasts the longest
• Scent: light — chosen for looks rather than fragrance
• Value: usually the most expensive of the three, as it is the slowest to grow
• Height: available in a range of sizes — ask in store for what’s ready now
• After Christmas: plant in the garden or repot for next year; hardy and long-lived
